Today, Respawn Entertainment released a free to play Battle Royale called Apex Legends, the game follows a hero-style gameplay like seen in games like Titanfall and the sequel, however, without the titans to help you out in the battlefield. The game is receiving a warm response by those who are playing it, and appreciating something different in an extremely saturated, and stagnant market of battle royale games.
Many gamers were hoping that Respawn Entertainment will also casually announce Titanfall 3, but it seems like that is not happening any time soon. As far as the official news is concerned, Titanfall 3 is not being developed at Respawn Entertainment, at least this very moment.
The news broke out when Drew McCoy, the lead producer at Respawn Entertainment started talking about the company’s motives behind launching Apex Legends as such a surprising event. Let’s not forget that the rumours about this game have been in the air for the past entire week, it is still important to know that the launch was almost rushed as no one saw it coming.
McCoy stated, “To try and convince a skeptical audience for months with trailers and hands-on articles, we’re just like ‘let the game speak for itself’—it’s the most powerful antidote to potential problems”. He further went on and said, “The world thinks we’re making Titanfall 3 and we’re not—this is what we’re making.”
For those like us who have been keeping an eye on Respawn Entertainment for about a year, this might be a surprising thing. This is because 2 years ago, Kotaku was told that Titanfall 3 is well into development, and the possible release window for the third installment would be the end of 2018. However, that did not happen, as we are in 2019 now, and there is no sign of Titanfall 3.
So, why the sudden change of heart? Well, we cannot really be sure. There are many speculations that are kicking the rumour mill at the moment. Many sources are claiming that Titanfall 3 was in development, however, Respawn Entertainment decided that it would be the right thing to work on Apex Legends, and release that instead. The reason why this sound pivotal is because if you look back at 2017, the Battle Royale scene was exploding with games like PUBG, and Fortnite dominating the charts across the platforms. This could very well be the reason that made Respawn Entertainment change their mind about Titanfall 3, and made them develop Apex Legends.
Whatever happened, we are sure of the fact that Titanfall 3 is not in development at this moment. However, does that mean that we are never going to see the game come out? Well, that is not entirely possibly. Sure, Respawn Entertainment is currently focusing on Apex Legends, and they even have an entire roadmap planned for the game, but that does not mean that Titanfall 3 is cancelled until it is officially stated.
Meanwhile, if you are bummed out by the news, do check out Apex Legends; I have been playing it since it launched, and I have to say that it happens to be one of the most exciting games available in the battle royale genre. Sure, the Titans are missing, but hey, you get some great gunplay, and the best part is that you do not require a beefy gaming PC to run the game.
What do you think of Respawn Entertainment’s statement on no work being done on Titanfall 3? Were you waiting for the sequel like many of the gamers were? Let us know what you think. Meanwhile, Apex Legends is available for free on Xbox One, PC, and PS4.
