In a rather unsurprising news, we have received information that another game is heading towards Epic store pretty soon. We are talking about the multi-player only called Dauntless. It turns out that the game will be ditching its own launcher in favour of moving to Epic Games Store. However, the developers Phoenix Labs were nice enough to clarify that this migration will strictly be an opt-in process, and not something that players will be forced to do.
This was confusing in the start as we were not sure if Dauntless would launch from two separate places, but upon clarifying this further, we were told that Dauntless will be launching exclusively from the Epic Games Store, but no player of the game will be asked to link their account to Epic Games Store without permission.
The representative of Phoenix Labs also talked about how no personal information will be shared with Epic Games once the process begins.
Dauntless was announced back at the Game Awards; it is a free to play game, and while it is still on beta, its move to Epic Games store does spark some controversy amidst the users and players alike. The game will be adopting a structure that is similar to Fortnite. To clear some confusions that users might have in mind, the developers did post some FAQs in order to help people understand.
For those who are wondering, you do not have to do anything as of right now. This means that you can very well keep the launcher. Eventually, the launcher will be of no use, and while there is no date for that, but considering how the switch will be happening in coming weeks, Phoenix Games will be converting the accounts, and once that is done, you will have to use the Epic Games launcher. However, keep in mind that the switch will only happen if the players opt in for that.
As per the statement released by Phoenix Games, it is better if you just create your account on Epic right now. However, the sad thing is that there is no sure way to say whether you will be able to keep your original user name because there is a possibility that the user name has already been taken by an existing user. The announcement is certainly not something that has been getting proper response, and acclaim as many users and players are against this decision.
While many were talking about the sudden change of heart, it seems like this move was not because of the revenue split policy that Epic has in place, but rather a different one. Phoenix Labs wants to follow a cross-platform route just as Fortnite has been doing. It means that the developers want their game to be played on multiple platforms, without having to worry about being on different platforms altogether, and considering how successful Fortnite’s cross-play is, we can certainly understand why the same would be wished for Dauntless.
According to an official statement from Phoenix Labs:
“When we started building Dauntless over four years ago, we had a vision: No matter where you were in the world or which platform you were playing on, you would be able to play with your friends. Epic Games blazed a trail by delivering the first game with true cross-play on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, mobile, and Nintendo Switch. We are grateful to partner with them on Dauntless.”
Currently, there is no word on the migration process, but if we are to go by what the developers are saying, the process will start as soon as possible. Whether or not you are making a move to Epic Games Store, it is best if you just create an account beforehand so you can avoid any discrepancies in the future that could cause you a problem.
For those who are interested, Dauntless will soon be available as a full game on Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, as well as PlayStation 4. Judging by all the early game play videos, and impressions, the game is certainly looking promising.
Let us know what you think about Phoenix Labs moving their game to Epic Game stores. Will it be able to enjoy the same level of success?
