When gods collide, introducing Reus

Sean Cargle January 19, 2013 - 2:11 am

Abbey Games’ has revealed Reus, a 2D god PC game that lets you take control of nature, deal with temperamental civilizations and change the course of the world.

God Games, there just aren’t enough of them. However, ever since developers started to realize that they are being neglected they have grown in popularity and scope, with plenty of new games trying to re-energize the genre, like Simon Roth’s Maia or War for the Overworld. Reus has a different approach than the rest with a unique 2D art style that gives you control of giants who roam a circular world that will be extremely susceptible to your every touch. This is Abbey Games’ first game, a developer from The Netherlands, and they have some ambitious ideas for this upcoming 2013 PC release.

There are many giants in this world and they all have different powers, but generally you will be able to terraform, create life, control weather and modify genes. The gods will be able to control just about everything, except for Humans, which is where the challenge comes in. As you change the environment and world you will have to deal with the Humans and their free will. As you will see in the video, the Humans will start to become problematic in certain destructive ways, but Abbey Games’ has yet to reveal just how you can influence them or how many different outcomes there can be.

Take a look at the very first gameplay video below and for more on the game keep your eye on the Reus website. It is all still pretty early on in development, but they do want to release the game by Q2 of 2013. Let me know what you think of it.
