Epic Games’ Mark Rein has said that the Unreal Engine 4 will be revealed later this year.

Epic are a company which is known as much for its technology as for its games, both have widely effected the industry. Games like Gears of War have cemented the cover shooter as a hallmark of modern shooters and the game engine it ran on, Unreal Engine 3, is practically an industry standard. So when Epic Games’ CEO Mark Rein says “People are going to be shocked later this year when they see Unreal Engine 4 and how much more profound an effect it will have,” he may not be boasting.
We’ve already seen what the late-stage UE3 can do: last year’s Samaritan video showed off a grim Blade Runner-esque world with exceptional visual fidelity.
So it’s pretty exciting to think what could be possible with the next engine. Which reminds me, I’m sure Epic said something about never just making a tech demo; that they’re always the basis of a game. After all GoW was a tech demo for the UE3 way back when. So be on the look out for Samaritan news too.
You’ll find it all here when it comes to light.
