List with a Twist: Gaming icons know that when it comes to fashion, it’s important to lead not follow. The fashion houses of Milan, Paris and New York are not for them – instead they blaze their own trail when it comes to dressing to impress. Here’s our top five trend-setters…
Bayonetta
It seems that every time any award show rolls round, up crops Lady Gaga in yet another extreme and baffling outfit. Her stylists must squeal in delight every time they come up with their latest zany idea, decorating her in whatever leftovers happen to be lying around the fridge. But no matter what get-up Gaga decks herself out in, be it a faux-fur jacket or the skin of her enemies, she’ll always be living in the shadow of Bayonetta. Bayonetta wears her own hair as a full body suit. She doesn’t do it for shock value or to make a statement: it’s simply her everyday garms. Whether it’s vanquishing demons or nipping out to pick up some milk, she’ll be found covered from head to toe in her own jet black hair. Give it up Gaga: you’re never going to top that. |
Tommy Vercetti
We’ve all got some older male relative who will insist on wearing a Hawaiian shirt whenever the prospect of visiting a beach comes up. From Florida to Blackpool, you can guarantee there’ll be a man in a loud and probably ill-fitting Hawaiian shirt, accompanied by friends and family with eyes glued to the ground from the shame. To put it mildly, it’s a hard look to pull off, so full credit to Tommy Vercetti for wearing this, ahem, “fetching” light blue, palm tree emblazoned shirt without any hint of embarrassment or irony. |
Altair
Altair: a man determined to blend into the shadows and the anonymity of crowds, masking himself from onlookers, swiftly disappearing into the night should anyone become aware of his presence. For a man so apparently concerned with secrecy, then, his decision to wear a Daz-washed blazingingly white, hooded robe is a touch odd. In all fairness, it’s a decision that left a mark on fashion for centuries to come. Altair’s raised hood influenced fashion in a world before street-style bloggers and social networking, making his achievement that much more impressive. Shaping the fashion choices of his own future bloodline, his unique look went on to grace the Italian catwalks of Florence and Rome, cementing his place in fashion history as the world’s first “hoodie”.

Mario
Wearing matching outfits with your brother is generally considered a touch creepy once you’re past a certain age, but Mario manages to separate himself from Luigi thanks to an ever-changing wardrobe. He’s got an ensemble for every occasion, and will happily dress as a bee, raccoon, or flower without a hint of self-consciousness, making him the perfect date for any fancy-dress party. Shame his date always seems to wear the same old pink princess get-up – that dress is really starting to show the grime of 25 years worth of castle dungeons…

Gordon Freeman
Do you know why Gordon Freeman never utters a single syllable? It’s because he lets his clothes do the talking. He’s the original hipster, wearing thick-rimmed glasses before they were cool. Sporting a fierce goatee and HEV suit, he hits the perfect mix of practical and bohemian cool. Freeman’s also fully aware of the importance of a accessorising, and you’ll never find him far from a trusty crowbar that really ties his outfit together.
