The Cave E3 trailer joins adventure and platforming in perfect harmony

News: The Cave is the latest on the long list to get an E3 trailer, showing off the seven different characters that’ll descend into its bowels in 2013.

‘Can you smell what The Cave is cooking?’ is not the tag-line for Ron Gilbert‘s new adventure/puzzle/platformer that’s due out later this year, even though it should be. Especially as The Cave can talk, and hearing it bellow that as you enter its gaping chasm (stop sniggering at the back) would be marvelous.

The Cave has you going into a cave (shocking revelation, I know), playing as seven different characters, of which you can play three at a time. They each bring different things to the table, so imagine some Trine-like puzzle solving, in what Ron Gilbert is describing as primarily an adventure game, but with added platforming to make traversing the world a lot more interesting than in older point-and-clicks where walking around was very slow paced.

“It’s kind of a dark comedy, it’s an adventure game, and it’s about the dark spot in each of these characters as they descend into the cave,” said Gilbert on GameTrailers. “It’s very much an adventure game, it’s a lot of adventure game puzzle solving, picking up items, figuring out where to use them. There’s a lot of platforming in the sense these characters are in a cave, so you are climbing up an down things, but that’s really not primarily the game. The game is primarily an adventure game.”
