Starbreeze Studios “forced” to lay off twenty-five employees on the eve of Syndicate launch.

With just seven days to go until the release of Syndicate, Starbreeze Studio’s have made the decision to lay off 25 staff members. 25 workers may be a tiny percentage of many studio’s, but for Swedish developer Starbreeze it represents a significant chunk of its workforce, having only 93 staff in on the payroll prior to the cull.

It is not uncommon for a developer to lose excess manpower just before a big launch as there is often very little to occupy a workforce as a game nears completion.

Starbreeze SEO, Mikael Nermark, spoke to GamesIndustry.biz of the layoff’s “It is sad that we are forced to make staff cutbacks affecting employees. But we have to reduce staff after the final delivery of the Syndicate.”

The hotly anticipated reboot has divided the opinions of gamers who were at first shocked that this remake would be presented as an FPS, far removed from its strategic 90s roots. Syndicate is due for release on the 24th February on PS3, 360 and PC.
