Suda 51 was “heartbroken” by Shadows of the Damned, says Shinji Mikami

News: Despite strong reviews, notable designer Goichi ‘Suda 51′ Suda was devastated that weirdo horror game Shadows of the Damned didn’t turn out as he’d planned it, according to co-creator Shinji Mikami.

Shadows of the Damned became “a completely different game” to what had originally been planned, co-creator Shinji Mikami has revealed. And the game’s other designer, Goichi ‘Suda 51′ Suda, was quite devastated by this.

The horror game got strong reviews – including BeefJack’s very own 8 out of 10. And yet Suda 51 suffered quite a blow by the game’s shifting form as development strode on.

“It became a completely different game. That was a bit disappointing,” Mikami said.

“I think Suda was unable to create the scenario he’d originally had in his head, and he rewrote the scenario several times. I think his heart was broken. He’s such a unique creator, so it seems to me that he was not quite comfortable with making this game.”

Speaking in an interview with CVG, Mikami added: “Yes, [the reviews were] pretty good, but it’s not a case of whether it was good or bad. The game was nothing like Suda had planned, which is rather sad. Mind you, if we’d made it as he originally planned, it probably would have sold even less, but it would have been very unique.”
