Steam reaches six million simultaneous users online
Robbie Palmer November 26, 2012 - 10:51 pmNews: Steam hits the impressive milestone of 6 million users online at once.
Steam, the hugely successful PC service, has reached 6 million simultaneous users online over the weekend, breaking previous records of 5 million.
The exact number was 6,046,314 set on November 25th. This year, Steam saw its Big Picture mode launch, allowing users to use its service in a more living room-friendly interface.
What are your thoughts on this milestone? I feel it’s a testament to the amazing service Valve offers. I believe Steam is currently the best, most exciting platform currently available. I’d love to see a gaming box designed by Valve to save me dragging my desktop into each room.

I can’t stand Steam. The way it empties my wallet with its awesomely cheap sales of great games. How it gives me easy access to all my games across all my machines, making it way too tempting to just load one up and play for hours. The fact that other digital distribution services look tired and anaemic in comparison, making me fill with bile whenever I go near Origin et al. That way they keep on making the service better every year, never resting on their laurels, making me wish I had the same kind of competence and dedication. Curse you, Valve, you magnificent bastards.
I totally agree with your loathing.
I used to hate Steam. Not in the way sqrrl101 mentions, although… yeah, that’s kind of how it is for me now. But the Steam of today isn’t the Steam I hated having on my computer years ago when I finally got around to getting Half-Life 2. Maybe in the years since, Steam has brainwashed me with subliminal messages. Or maybe Steam just doesn’t suck and isn’t as much a resource hog as it once was.
