Sony always had the latest format, helping market their consoles and giving married men a way to bring home a system that their wife doesn’t otherwise want. When the PS2 came out, it was the cheapest DVD player. The PS3 had the same advantages with BluRay, dropping way below the standard price.
Now however, BluRay player’s prices have dropped leaving the $400 PS3 behind by over $100 and leaving sony in need of a plan. Well, they now have a plan and it’s based on the sheer size of the BluRay disc; it can store 50GB whereas the 360′s DVDs can store only 9GB. Sony is working on bundling movies and games not in one package, but on one disc.
This way, when Transformers 2 comes out on BluRay, you would be able to watch or play from the same menu. Sony really needs to up their game and this idea is a good one. I think they should still drop the price of the PS3 by $100. But, if this hybrid disc works out in tandem with a price drop Sony could start edging forward.

No Way! Because right now the PS3 games are NOT region locked! Once you add movies the games become based on region losing one of several of its greatest assets.

I don’t know that the PS3 needs reviving. However, I think it could be said that the system could use a boost. If Sony’s plan for longevity for the PS3 rings true, I might just find myself with my foot in my mouth, but right now, the PS3 sits behind all the other consoles, in that it isn’t making Sony that much money, especially when you consider how much it costs for them to build the machines.
As far as the other comment, I’m just reporting the news. Sony announced it, and I’m sure that they’ll figure something out, though I haven’t heard anything as of yet.
