Sony: No PS4 at E3 because “we don’t need to talk about that yet”
Simon Williams June 6, 2012 - 1:44 pmNews: The PS3 has so many games coming that Sony couldn’t even fit them all into their E3 conference, says Scott Rohde, and that’s why there was no mention of the PlayStation 4, though development on titles for the next-gen platform is already underway.
Many pundits expected that Sony would at least touch upon the PlayStation 4 in their E3 2012 press briefing, but in the end their focus remained firmly on their current hardware line-up. Sony’s senior vice president Scott Rohde has been explaining why that decision was made.
“It was just something we didn’t feel was important to bring up this year,” Rohde explained in a video interview with GTTV. “We had probably five or ten other games that probably deserved stage time that didn’t get it, right? We always have so much to talk about that we felt we didn’t need to talk about that just yet.”
Another reason that Sony didn’t feel compelled to reveal anything about its next genration of hardware was how comfortable the company is with longer console lifecycles, as Rohde explained: “Believe it or not, PlayStation 2 still sells well in some parts of the world, so we’re still supporting that to a degree. It’s the way this company is set up – to handle those sorts of things – so it’s not something we’re concerned about.”
But that doesn’t mean that PlayStation 4 development – on both the hardware and software front – isn’t already heavily underway: ”We’re not talking about when the machine is coming out, but I think that everyone on the planet knows that of course games are in development.”
