Resident Evil was ‘stuck in the same old pattern’ – Raccoon City producer

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City offers the series the chance to get out of “the same old pattern” it had become stuck in, says the game’s producer.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City might not be going down enormously well with series diehards, replacing as it does the survival horror with high-octane co-op shooting, but it serves an important purpose according to producer Masachika Kawata.

It brings new elements to a series whose design documents always looked troublingly similar, said the long-term Capcom man – who says that shaking things up is important when a franchise is starting to look a little stale.

“We think we managed to bring more excitement and thrill to the fans of Resident Evil and [the Resident Evil] universe,” he said.

Speaking in an interview with CVG, Kawata explained that repetition makes a series boring. “When game designs for a series becomes stuck in the same old pattern, it becomes less entertaining and exciting,” he said. “With ORC, we were able to come up with new ideas. It was a challenge, but was worth it.”

The game’s out on 20th March in North America, 23rd in Europe, for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Keep up to date with all the latest Resident Evil news!
