Resident Evil 6 to have “the basic element of survival horror” within three distinct playstyles

News: Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, producer on Resident Evil 6, has stated that the game’s three playable characters will each come with their own playstyle, but the overarching theme is still “survival horror.”

Our own Lewis Denby recently implored Capcom to just come out and call Resident Evil 6 an action game. Its demonstration at E3 belied an incredibly frenetic sequence with guns, exploding helicopters, more guns, combat rolls, and zombies more as cannon fodder than individually challenging foes. Did it in fact fully abandon its survival horror origins? It might be for the same reason that Dead Space 3 also showed an action-heavy slice of gameplay: it’s an attention-grabbing trick since “horror doesn’t demo well.”

Resident Evil 6 will feature three playable characters whose storylines will cross over in co-op as well. According to Resident Evil 6 producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, “horror is of course the overall theme, but there are three distinct playstyles [for each playable character]. All of them have the basic element of survival horror, but we’ve also added some separate themes for each one.”

“For example, Leon has much more of a classic Resident Evil gothic horror feel. Chris is part of a squad and it has that kind of fear you have whenever the people around you are being picked off one by one,” Hirabayashi tells GTTV. ”If you recall in Resident Evil 3, you were being pursued by the Nemesis character. Jake’s story is very much one of pursue and escape. He’s being relentlessly pursued by this enemy character.”

“So we have these three distinct identities, but they are all wrapped up in the same brand identity that is Resident Evil,” Hirabayashi concludes, without saying what that actually is.

All well and good, but considering that Capcom has stated before that “survival horror doesn’t sell as well as Call of Duty“, it does seem like they’re trying to appeal to that market with what we’ve been shown so far.
