Maths, Science, PS3, English, History – wait! PS3? Yup, the PS3 is being made available to univsersity students in the form of ‘mini dev kits’.
The programme, unveiled by Sarah Lemarie at the Develop Conference 2009 is currently in a closed beta stage and will be opened slowly. Lemarie, who holds the title of SCEE R&D’s Education Contact and Support Infrastructure Development Team Manager, has given a few details of the consoles: So far we know they will include a low power mode, two USB ports and include a full software development kit.
Lemarie talks of the advantages of the programme over Linux:
“Of course universities can use Linux to program on the PS3 but I would really strongly recommend that if you are interested in the PS3 you look into this, as the experience you will get over Linux is quite incredible.”
It’s not quite an everyday school subject as we made out earlier but the opportunity to spend time developing on a modern console will excite future developers. It will also likely aggrieve those veteran developers who learnt their trade on a machine far less advanced than the PS3.
