Pokéwalker more accurate than “normal” pedometers according to research

Don’t worry, you’re not the only one confused and bemused by this news headline, because research showing that a Pokéwalker can more accurately track your steps than several standard pedometers… it’s quite mind blowing really. Yet, research conducted at Iowa State University, according to The Gazette.com, suggests that it is more capable of counting steps than pedometer models bought for the sole purpose of doing that.

The study compared the Pokéwalker to two models of Pedometer: the DigiWalker pedometer and the Sensewear armband. All three were tested at various walking speeds on a treadmill. All three had inaccurate results at extremely slow speeds compared to manual counting, but speeds more akin to walking pace saw the Pokéwalker excel. Lorraine Lanningham-Foster explained what the research could mean:

“In comparing all those measures, the Pokéwalker did very well. It’s very accurate and precise. So as a tool that can be used to actually change behavior and a child can use to truly understand and learn about how much they’re walking, it could be a good tool.”

Understandably, the study found that kids liked the Pokéwalker more than adults. I mean, when was the last time you saw a grown man trying to cheat a Pokéwalker so that he could get more Watts to spend on trying to catch Pokémon that weren’t available in their copy of the game?

Many Pokémon fans just left their Pokéwalkers on a side unit when Heart Gold and Soul Silver were released last year, I know I often did. Though I have to admit that when I did bother to use it, it did offer a small amount of amusement when I had nothing better to do for three minutes.
