News: The PlayStation Eye may be getting a significant, Kinect-like update, according to a new patent filed by Sony.

With news floating around about the “Xbox 720,” everyone’s been wondering what Sony has up its sleeve. The answer might be found in a new patent that Sony has filed. The patent is for a “User-Drive Three Dimensional Interactive Gaming Environment,” and seems to be an upgrade to the PlayStation Eye.
Vg247 reports that the document details the addition of “real-time three-dimensional interactive environment” using the camera’s infrared “depth sensing device.” The patent also includes a description of depth sensitive technology, making the PS Eye a “system for providing a real-time three-dimensional interactive environment.” It’s uncertain whether this patent is just a way to compete with the Microsoft Kinect, or if it may be a part of the next generation PlayStation.
