It took 28 years, but the gaming world’s longest standing record was smashed late Monday night as John McAllister set the new high score for the arcade classic Asteroids.
McAllister, who started playing Saturday, broadcast the record play through over Justin.tv, a stream that became quite popular as he neared the record.
If you’re not familiar with the game record keeping scene, which was explored briefly in the documentary King of Kong, in order for McAllister’s score to be official it has to be verified by the record keeping body Twin Galaxies.
Oh, and just in case you were curious, McAllister’s final score was 41,338,740, nearly 2,00o more points than the previous record of 41,336,440.
