Path of Exile opens its doors on January 23rd

Titan Quest and Diablo 1 & 2 are the games ARPG fans usually turn to when talking about what new ARPG should aspire to be. Path of Exile is that type of ARPG, an old school one that is filled with complexity, familiar graphics, loot, gem systems and pretty much everything one might expect from a proper ARPG. However, this game is going to be free, it is online and it has been in closed beta ever since August of 2011. Now the game is about to hit open beta on January 23rd and anyone will be able to jump into the game.
Free 2 Play generally turns most people off, understandably, but in this case people are loving it. Supporters and crowd funding have raised over $1.8 million towards the development of Path of Exile and just recently the game won IndieDB’s Players’ Choice Best Upcoming Game. The folks at Grinding Gears Games have prided themselves on developing an online game that focuses on player choice and strategic freedom. There are over 1350 skills you can apply to any given class and starting as a specific classes merely starts you orientated towards a more specific set of skills, but you can explore any of it.
Just like any ARPG Path of Exile has acts and when the open beta comes they will be adding Act 3 to mix, which is the last Act that they have revealed so far. The open beta is also pretty much a launch of Path of Exile. Once the beta starts there are going to be no more character wipes regardless of the status of development. I haven’t been able to try the game myself just yet, but on Monday I will be heading to a press event to see it first hand.
If you cannot wait to get into the open beta you can support the game by paying for various tiers of rewards and any of them will get you closed beta access, the cheapest of which is $10. Find that all on the Path of Exile website. Take a look at the game in action with one of their more recent beta videos and check back with BeefJack for more news on the game before it enters open beta on January 23rd.
