Path of Exile Open Beta launches – after early technical hitches are overcome it exceeds developer expectations

Six years in the making, Path of Exile is finally available to everyone. Early signs are looking very positive indeed for Developers Grinding Gear Games

Path of Exile Beta launches - after early technical hitches are overcome it exceeds developer expectations with 56,700 playersPicture the scene: You’ve spent six years toiling away on your game, six years of blood sweat and tears, hopes and dreams poured into this digital entity. Your soul writ large onto the screens of players world-wide. Your excitement reaches fever pitch as you see the numbers spiking, as more and more people are drawn to your creation. Then your server crashes. Oh.

While this might sound like a crushing blow, it’s the same news that seems to accompany the release of pretty much every Action RPG with a heavy multi-player component (see Diablo III for further evidence of this phenomenon). Thankfully Grinding Gears were not yet resting on their laurels and well, this is Open Beta, these things are kind of supposed to happen. So it’s heartening to see that the technical issues with Path of Exile have already been fixed (we at BeefJack can certainly sympathise after a difficult week!) and Grinding Gears are reporting that they’ve hit a peak of 56,700 simultaneous players already.

Lead Designer Chris Wilson in a lengthy blog shared his thoughts with us, stating “The last few days have been amazing for us. After working for over six years on Path of Exile, we are proud to say that its Open Beta launch was a complete success.”

We’ll bring you further news and opinions of Path of Exile here at BeefJack, you can grab the Beta client by heading here.
