A new website has popped up on the Internet that I stumbled upon called Omegle. The idea is simple yet cool at the same time. When connected to the site you are randomly matched with another individual and placed in a chat room. What happens here is up to you and of course you are dealing with the Internet.
The idea was created by Leif K-Brooks and was first launched on March 25th. Playing around with it I encountered a cross section of the Internet, a little weird but in some cases some pretty cool conversations. Your results may vary but the popularity of the site has only grown.
Around 1800 people are now connected and chatting and I can’t help but thinking that the website is bringing us all a bit closer together… virtually that is. Is this what the whole “Web 2.0″ phenomenon was about? I’m not quite sure but it’s pretty damn cool either way.
Leif says he wants to see meaningful discussions and not just trolls and spam and will be looking for a way to crack down on such activity. I wish him well as I continue to explore the far reaches of the Internet and Omengle is taking me one step closer.

Isn’t this just a copy of http://www.anicechat.net which pioneered the concept over a year ago? I mean, there are numerous of proofs for this, for instance, A Nice Chat was discovered on StumbleUpon on 8th September, 2008: http://www.stumbleupon.com/url/www.anicechat.net/
…and Omegle was launched 25th March, 2009.

i’ve talked to lots of ppl and hardly see any spam. i get real human beings that are normal. they just live way out in missouri, virginia and even Turkey! hey, if it’s meant to be and i talk to the ONE, great. if not, i’m happy to continue meeting ppl in the real world, like i already have.

All I got was a large amount of perverts wanting to cyber. The only person that was decent was a cute kid in college in Nepal, out of 10 people I chatted to.
Its a nice idea but there needs to be a report button instead of just a disconnect

Omegle Rocks!!
According to wikipedia- When this service was launched, it generated about 100 users. Now at last report, (as of the month of April) the amount of people online at any time was reaching more or less around 3000. The report also states that the site is getting around 150,000 hits a day.

Tried it tonight after reading this, have to say there’s some weird people on there…I might as well talk to Alice, she’s more entertaining. :-/ mainly people just wanting cybering, but I met one ok one. I kind of wish it had “rooms” for adult, and the rest of us that just want to talk to peeps

I like Omegle and sometimes do get mad at the amount of rudness, but what I do is at the beginning of each conversation I say something like “I do not want sex nor do I have pictures! I just want to carry on a nice convo.” and they will either leave or stay. It is as simple as that! Keep Omegling!
