Nintendo: Wii U release date Christmas 2012

The Nintendo Wii U release date will coincide with Christmas 2012 in ‘major markets’, the company’s president, Satoru Iwata, has confirmed.

Things have been rather quiet on the Wii U front since the console was unveiled at E3 last year. Nintendo’s new machine was always slated for a 2012 release date, but any time between June and December is what we’d been told to expect.

The company’s president, Satoru Iwata, confirmed a more specific plan today, though. The console will indeed stick within this time frame, although it’ll push towards the end of it – it’ll be out in all ‘major markets’ by Christmas.

Speaking at an investor meeting in Japan this morning, Iwata announced that the machine will be available in time for the holiday season in Japan, North America, Europe and Australia.

The company is yet to reveal any tech specs for the machine, although after a shaky announcement in 2011 Nintendo are expected to re-take to the stage at this year’s E3 with a glut of new details. When they turn up, we’ll have them for you.

  1. The biggest problem the Wii-U (hahahahah) have is that if it launch too late it will probably run the risk of having to fend off a next Xbos/PS4 announcement. If priced too high, it will have people waiting to see what Sony and MS will do.
