Nintendo patents massively single-player online games

A patent filed by Nintendo in February 2010 was published last week, and it reveals Nintendo’s plans for massively single-player online games.

The patent describes these single-player online games as “A method and apparatus that allows a player to play a massively single-player online game without directly interacting with other players, while affecting and being affected by other players playing the online game.”

This may mean games where the things you do affect the world and other players. 1Up predicts that one example  of how this may look is “a player spreading gossip to an NPC, which it in turn shares with another player.” The system may also be similar to the one used by Demon’s Souls, where players can leave messages for others by choosing from a list of preset words.

The idea of a single-player online game would fit in with Nintendo’s family-friendly image. Players would be protected from other players but still have the benefit of playing with others. Kind of like family board-game night, only no one is allowed to speak.
