For the first time in nine years, Activision didn’t churn out an annual Tony Hawk game in 2008. Gamers seemed to be getting bored with the pioneering franchise, and crazy costumes, off-board walking, and skatable KISS concerts weren’t piquing anyone’s interest. So they’ll be trying to inject some new energy into this year’s Tony Hawk game in the form of a skateboard peripheral.
It’s been rumoured for a while now, but Variety has two first-hand sources confirming that the as-yet-untitled game will eschew button combos for a dedicated bit of molded plastic you can throw in your Guitar Hero instrument closet. Little is known for sure right now, but the peripheral will supposedly rely more on grabbing and moving the board rather than Wii Fit-esque precision balancing.
In addition to kicking the traditional controller to the curb, Acitivision are also going with a different developer this time around. Neversoft, the creators of the last sixteen billion Tony Hawk games, have been replaced by Robomodo, a new studio composed mostly of former EA Chicago employees.
Personally, I’m just hoping the new Tony Hawk game will stick with the exaggerated, arcade style of its predecessors. As technically impressive as the Skate games have been, they just don’t have that same sense of crazy fun you get from grinding right by a tongue-waggling Gene Simmons.
