New Xbox 360 console model to come by 2012?

Posted November 23, 2011 by Patrick Lindsey in News.

Rumors of an “Xbox 720″ by next year may in fact point to a new Xbox 360 console model in 2012.

While IndustryGamers seems to think that the “Xbox 720” may see life by next year in order to compete with the Wii U, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter thinks we may be jumping the gun. What we may be getting instead is simply a new model of the existing Xbox 360 by 2012.

Pachter spoke out on the matter, calling rumors of a 2012 Xbox 720 “silly.” He went on to claim that, rather than a whole new console, what is most likely happening is that Microsoft are “modifying the current Xbox 360 to allow it to operate Windows 8.”

While continually steady sales of the Xbox 360 may obviate Microsoft’s need for a whole new console, wary gamers may be hesitant to upgrade their hardware again, so soon after the introduction of the Kinect-ready Xbox 360 “slim” at last year’s E3.

Is possible Windows 8 integration enough to get you to trade up once more next Christmas? Let us know!

  1. I wish they would get around to releasing a new generation of consoles. The 360 and PS3 are ridiculously out of date compared to modern PC hardware and it’s retarding the development of PC games as only a handful of developers are willing to spend the extra time to push the graphical capabilities further than is necessary for the consoles.

    • Honestly, the stagnation of console cycles, as some have characterised it, is something I’d like to see continue for a while yet.

It’s the first time in my memory that we’ve had a break from the graphics race and had something else drive development instead.Even the most conservative AAA developers have had to market their games via interesting mechanics, rather than normal mapping or fancy shadows.

Whenever I hear about a new Xbox or PS on the horizon, my first instinct is to take a sharp turn to the left and keep on going.
