New Super Mario Bros. 2 announced for 3DS
James Archer April 21, 2012 - 1:11 pmNews: Mario’s next 3DS game will be a pure side-scrolling affair in the sequel to 2006′s New Super Mario Bros.
Nintendo‘s upcoming Mario game for the 3DS is…well, not Super Mario 4, actually. Darn. It’s New Super Mario Bros 2, which Joystiq reports will still return to the plumber’s side-scrolling roots. The 2D platformer – a followup to New Super Mario Bros, released on the DS in 2006 – was announced in a Nintendo Direct livestream last night. It’ll launch in Japan this August, presumably with international releases to follow. UPDATE: Nintendo of America, as spotted by The Verge, have confirmed an August launch in North America as well.
The domain SuperMario4.com was snapped up by Nintendo last week, suggesting a sequel to the original Mario series was on the cards. Looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer to see what that’s all about.
Japanese site Esuteru grabbed a few stills of the livestream showing the new game in action, which can be seen here. You can also get more Nintendo news right here on BeefJack.
