MuchDifferent tech demo hosts 1000-player FPS deathmatch

1,000 players and no lag? MuchDifferent flex their tech muscles in a record-breaking FPS deathmatch.

Sticking it to multiplayer shooters everywhere, MuchDifferent‘s technological showcase demo, Man Vs Machine, blew away the competition during a one-off event. Boasting a record-breaking, 1,000 players linked into the same game, via new online technology that allowed players to seamlessly migrate from server to server on the fly.

A thousand live players, in a single match, playing via their browsers, was made possible via uLink and PikkoServer, a program touted as ‘engine- agnostic’, capable of working alongside any other existing system to provide a similar level of speed and connectivity amongst players. Currently only seen in conjunction with MuchDifferent’s Unity3 engine, it’s obvious that this is a skillful publicity stunt, albiet one that will pique the interest of many dedicated online MMO players.

The event, which saw many hopeful players turned away due to the overwhelming demand to take part, aimed to break the record set by Zipper Interactive’s MAG, hosting 256 players at a time. Although the event seemingly went off without a hitch, as you can see in the video below (which resulted in the Machines obliterating the human forces in the end), the official website still credits MAG as the record holder.

In the end, despite the event pushing the envelope when it comes to tech demos, MuchDifferent were courteous enough to thank the player who took part for supplying the unbridled carnage that ensued:

‘We would like to send a big hug to everyone who played, tried to play or showed interest in this event. Without you this would not have been possible.’
