More Bad Press for Gamers

Posted January 17, 2009 by Charles McManamy in News.

Coming in the week that Daniel Petric (17), was convicted for murdering his mother in a dispute over Halo 3, another story has emerged of gaming related violence in a teenager. In the latest story Zachary Moir (19) from Deltona was jailed for assaulting his mother by shoving her, throwing a taco in her face and calling her a “retard” after she had unplugged his Xbox. It will probably not be too long before we get another round of media scare stories claiming that video games cause violence.

In related news the results of a study released this week ”shockingly” showed that the people who enjoy violence in video games the most are those that score high in aggression traits to begin with. The study also found that for most people increased gore and violence does not increase enjoyment of a game but can make it less enjoyable. This study will probably be ignored though by those advocating tighter controls on games though, just as they ignore the fact that games have age ratings for a reason, it is not the games publishers fault that parents ignore them.
