Daniel Kaplan, Business Developer at Mojang, has said he is “bored” by Minecraft clones – but isn’t interested in suing copycats.
FortressCraft is quite the thing. It’s the best-selling indie game on the Xbox Live Marketplace and has grossed millions of dollars from hundreds of thousands of sales in less than a year since release. It is also, as you can probably tell from the screenshot above, a blatant Minecraft clone.
What does Mojang’s Business Developer Daniel Kaplan think of copycats like FortressCraft? “I’m really bored by the clones,” Kaplan told Eurogamer. “They don’t bring anything new to the table which is really sad.”
Despite – or perhaps because of – his apathy, Kaplan isn’t interested in taking legal action against the clones. “As long as they don’t use anything we MADE, we don’t care. Like, would the Doom creators sue everybody who has done an FPS? Don’t think so“, he noted.
The lasting popularity of FortressCraft and its creatively dubious ilk is likely to be tested when Minecraft itself is released on Xbox Live Arcade later this year, possibly as early as April.
In the meantime, BeefJack has you covered for all the latest Minecraft news.
