Minecraft: Pocket Edition iOS Survival Mode released

Jeremy Peel February 18, 2012 - 11:34 am

A week after its Android release, Survival Mode has come to Minecraft: Pocket Edition on iOS.

Last weekend, an update quietly creeped its way across Android devices, adding the first mobile iteration of Survival Mode to Minecraft: Pocket Edition; then, the iOS release was “imminent”, which meant “a week’s time”.

As previously reported, the new mode currently includes only the most basic essentials for a solo block party: weapons, sheep, zombies and the day/night cycle.

Much of the work of Mojang developer Daniel Kaplan is under the hood, who was forced to rewrite much of Pocket Edition’s code after it became clear that fans were clamouring for more than the open sandbox delivered at release.

The good news is that the stage is now set for crafting, creepers and however much else of the PC Minecraft Survival experience can possibly fit onto a walkie-talkie.

As it stands, however, I’m getting an error message upon downloading the update – “The item you tried to buy is no longer available”. If you’re having similar problems, do let us know in the comments.

This weekend, Kaplan and the rest of Mojang are busy leading the Humble Bundle Mojam, which has already raised more than $200,000.
