Minecraft creator tells skint fan: ‘Just pirate it’

What if you can’t afford to purchase a copy of Minecraft? “Just pirate it,” says creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, suggesting a fan purchases a legitimate copy once he’s got the money.

The videogame piracy debate continues to rage, and industry figures are more than willing to voice their thoughts on the matter. But it’s quite rare to see a developer actively suggest that a potential fan downloads an illegal copy of their game. That’s what Markus ‘Notch’ Persson did today, though, when a Twitter user asked him for a free account as he couldn’t afford to purchase a copy of the game.

“Just pirate it,” Notch replied. “If you still like it when you can afford it in the future, buy it then.”

The Swedish indie developer added with a wink that the Twitter user, Panama-based Andres Leay, should remember to ‘feel bad’ about it should he take the advice.

Leay appeared to be so amused by Notch’s response that he decided to purchase a legitimate copy anyway. “hahahahaha,” he tweeted. “I will buy it in that case.”

Minecraft, possibly the most high-profile indie game ever to grace the PC, reached version 1.0 late last year. We thought the game so impressive by this point that we awarded it a whopping 9.5 out of 10 in our huge Minecraft review.

  1. It is easy to say that when your profits are up and you know that will get you some points with consumers. But once he get big enough, will he say the same if his profits are down?
