Kojima dishes out Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes details
Lewis Denby September 27, 2012 - 2:11 pmNews: Just how open is the world of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes? And how is it taking a lead from Peace Walker? Hideo Kojima dishes out the details for the next MGS title.

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes features an open-world system that is nothing like anything else around at the moment, according to Hideo Kojima.
Speaking at the Eurogamer Expo today, Kojima described what sounds like a hub-based system of smaller “open-worlds” within a larger universe – linked together by helicopter travel.
“But within each open-world, how you play that is completely up to the player. It’s hard to compare it to anything else out there right now. It really is up to the player.”
Responding to a question about whether this open-world nature might affect the claustrophobic atmosphere of previous Metal Gear Solid games, Kojima said he’s almost certain it won’t.
“The gameplay is still stealth, and if you play it that way it’s the basic cycle that you go through,” he said. “Even though how you infiltrate that base [in the demo] is free, it’s the same basic gameplay – you’ve just got more options available to you now.
“And as you complete the cycle and complete various missions you also have the main storyline” – which unravels as you complete missions, revealed Kojima.
Plus, the base-centric mechanics of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker look set to return.
“I think the concept of developing weapons and creating new things at your base, and having that influence the gameplay, is a great idea. It can be very popular, and is definitely something that we’re thinking of,” he said.
“And furthermore, nowadays, there are various ways to access the game world. You’re not just playing in your living room on your games console – you may also be playing on your cell phone or other devices and playing the same game.”
Kojima said he couldn’t reveal too much at this stage, but said these are some of the things he and his team are thinking about with Ground Zeroes.
Showing a gameplay demo, in which the player eventually pilots a helicopter, he said: “You fly in real time, you land, and you can walk around your base at that point. There’s no loading going on. And you can design that base. It’s a base that you create.
“For those who just want to focus more on the main missions you can do that. You’re not required to customise the base if you don’t want to, but the option is there.”
