June NPD Figures: Only Xbox 360 shows improvement over 2008

The June NPD figures for hardware sales have been released, with everyone showing an improvement over last months sales:

DS: 766K up 132K (+20%)
Wii: 361K up 71K (+24%)
X360: 240K up 65K (+37%)
PS3: 165K up 34K (+26%)
PSP: 164K up 64K (+64%)
PS2: 153K up 36K (+31%)

However when compared to last year, the figures do not make such good viewing (2008 figures shown first):

DS : 783K vs 766K ( down 17K/2.2%)
Wii : 667K vs 361K (down 306K/45.8%)
X360 : 219K vs 240K (up 21K/9.6%)
PS3 : 405K* vs 165K (down 240K/59%)
PSP : 337K vs 164K (down 173K/51%)
PS2 : 189K vs 153K (down 36K/19%)

*220K of PS3 sales was the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle

Only the Xbox 360 has shown any improvement over last year, with the Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3 and the PSP all showing sharp declines in sales of around 50%. It should be noted that part of the slump in PS3 sales is due to the increase in sales in June 2008 caused by the release of Metal Gear Solid 4.

While the Wii has shown a massive decline in sales, it still outsells the Xbox 360 and PS3. More worrying for Sony if the current sales trends for the PS3 continue even accounting for the MGS4 effect, there is a chance that the PS3 will be outsold by the PS2 and PSP in the near future.

The figures for software sales for June were also released and in a shock turn of events after 29 months the Wii Remote packaged with Wii Play is not in the top 10:
