Jailbreak this: Sony confirm Android tablet?

There were rumours doing the rounds at trade shows earlier this year that Sony’s attempt to gain a foothold in the mobile gaming market was going to involve more than just the Xperia PLAY, or ‘Playstation Phone’. Gamesindustry.biz reports those rumours have apparently just been confirmed.

Bloomberg makes reference to a story in the Nikkei newspaper where CEO Howard Stringer refers to a Sony-branded tablet also using the Android operating system that’s due later this summer.

Tech website Engadget originally started circulating the rumours of a ‘Playstation tablet’, supposedly looking like a folded magazine and running a dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 chip. It’s not yet clear whether this is the machine Stringer talks about, or Sony have two tablet devices planned.

While the Xperia PLAY is under-powered compared to the top end Android handsets just coming out, Sony’s marketing clout is obvious in the way they’ve got developers falling over themselves to give the handset time-limited exclusives and games optimised for it. It’ll be interesting to see if they can push a Playstation tablet in the same way.
