Indie developer meets with UK Chancellor

In addition to the UK government announcing in last month’s Budget that the UK gaming industry will be offered tax relief, Chancellor Alistair Darling met up with Ella Romanos, Managing Director of Remode Studios, last Thursday to discuss issues affecting independent game developers in the UK.  Ella put forward several issues that she believed needed to be addressed to ensure that indie developers were given the same chances as larger game studios to succeed.

Ella emphasied the case for indies by informing the Chancellor that:

“Indies have an important role to play in the industry, particularly with regards to innovation, creating new IP, growth potential, creating highly skilled, knowledge based jobs and their potential to inspire kids and students to stay in education and study core subjects such as maths and science.”

What Ella said during the meeting tied in the UK government’s strive to encourage young people to study maths and science at secondary, FE and HE levels, and to seek careers that use them.  With this high profile meeting and the outcome of last month’s Budget it shows that the UK government is finally taking the growing UK games industry seriously.
