id Frags Google over Apps

Android users looking for a Doom fix may have some trouble on their hands.

ZeniMax Media, owners of Bethesda and id Software, has gone on the offensive against Google’s Android Market for selling non id licensed games on it’s service.

Zeni filed a Digital Millennium Copyright Act complaint against Google for the offending titles which include id classics Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake.

Zeni acquired id and it’s properties back in June and since then has begun a suddenly large player in the game industry.  For example, Zenimax announced today that Bethesda would be the new publisher of id developed RAGE.

While it has been brought up that Doom is technically open source at this point, id still retains the copyright over the property, meaning unlicensed version of the game being sold for profit could be a problem.

Stay tuned as this topic is sure to get interesting.  Google has not yet responded, and we may see more of this sort of thing in the coming months.
