CPU company IBM have announced they are to end development on the Cell processor today.

The company developed the cell processor, which powers Sony’s PlayStation 3, with Sony and Toshiba. While the cell has been notoriously difficult to develop for, companies such as Naughty Dog have made several breakthroughs of late.

IBM will now focus on a new type of processor as the company shifts to a more integrated with GPU (graphics processing unit) model, though it did say that Cell technology would be moulded into future CPU’s. Sony were hoping cell development would continue for several years since they wanted to incorporate it into the PlayStation 4, making transition easier. That could still happen, but the future isn’t so clear cut for Sony now.
