He was so young! Company of Heroes Online shut down for good?

Alas, poor Company of Heroes Online, we hardly knew ye? It looks as if developer Relic’s experiment in taking the popular WWII RTS free-to-play wasn’t a success.

As reported by GamePolitics, Relic have announced on their website they’re closing the beta, they’re not willing to go into any details of what’ll happen to the franchise next, they’re urging players to spend any virtual cash they’ve still got left now (and don’t count on any refunds) plus official posts on the forums are all but openly stating that’s that. (Everything’s been conveniently gathered together on this nice, neat blog post from a fan.)

If this really is the last we’ll see of the game, there’s no clear indication yet of what might have sunk it, though all of Relic’s games – while undoubtedly very successful – have had their fair share of long-running complaints from fans about balance issues.
