Half-Life 3: Gabe Newell cryptically discusses delay
Lewis Denby April 23, 2012 - 9:50 amNews: Valve show no sign of announcing Half-Life 3 or any Half-Life-related project any time soon, but Gabe Newell might have cryptically explained the reason for such a long silence…

Don’t mention Half-Life 3! That seems to be Gabe Newell’s tactic, anyway, even when he pretty much seems to be talking about it.
The Valve boss has been talking in the first episode of the 7DCD podcast about an upcoming project, Ricochet 2. Given that Ricochet was one of the least memorable Valve games, and it’s something that’s never been announced as existing, he’s probably not really talking about that. And what he does seem to be talking about is the next Half-Life game, whose development has been a little turbulent.
“In terms of Ricochet 2, we always have this problem that when we talk about things too far in advance,” Newell said.
“We end up changing our minds as we’re going through and developing stuff, so as we’re thinking through the giant story arc which is Ricochet 2, you might get to a point where you’re saying something is surprising us in a positive way and something is surprising us in a negative way, and, you know, we’d like to be super-transparent about the future of Ricochet 2.”
Basically, it’s worse to lead fans on when things are constantly changing than it is to just zip your lips.
Everyone’s already got their theories, though. A planned Half-Life 2: Episode 3 seems to be off the cards, people have decided, meaning the next game will surely be a full sequel.
Actually, though, despite no evidence whatsoever, I’d say they’re almost certainly right.
