GLaDOS voice in Pacific Rim trailer “just as a wink”, del Toro asked Valve’s permission
Joannes Truyens January 6, 2013 - 1:37 pmThe inclusion of GLaDOS in the trailer of Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming sci-fi flick Pacific Rim was a deliberate, Valve Software-sanctioned nod to the Portal series, but there won’t be any crossover.

When the first trailer to the upcoming sci-fi film Pacific Rim hit the intertubes, those who played Valve Software’s seminal Portal games (which should be everyone) noticed that it included an AI that sounded a lot like GLaDOS. The film’s director, the inimitable Guillermo del Toro, has stated that this was a deliberate nod to the series.
“I wanted very much to have her, because I’m a big Portal fan,” del Toro told the Toronto Sun. “But just as a wink. She’s not cake-obsessed. She’s not out to destroy humanity.”
No crossover between the two properties then, but a nice little touch on del Toro’s part. The man actually asked Valve Software for permission to include the voice, since “there’s no AI I’d rather have than GLaDOS.”
I am now imagining del Toro walking into the Valve offices and saying: “Okay, I’m making a giant movie involving giant robots that punch giant monsters. Can I put GLaDOS in it?” Bewildered, Gabe Newell asks for a moment’s consideration in the other room. Once there, he just jumps up and down for five minutes.
Del Toro’s Insane trilogy has recently been picked up by an as yet unknown developer who “loves the package.” He’s previously been quoted as saying that Valve would be a perfect candidate for producing his game. Are there any straws I can grasp at?
Here’s the trailer if you want to have a listen-hear.
