GameStop to close in Northern Ireland, Portugal

US-based retailer GameStop is to cease operations in both Northern Ireland and Portugal, with some suggesting the company will leave Europe entirely.

GameStop is a big name within videogames retail. The US company might not have a massive high street presence here in Britain, but elsewhere in the world its stores are reasonably prevalent. Well, not any more if you’re in Northern Ireland or Portugal, it seems.

This week, GameStop announced that it would close its stores in Northern Ireland, and now the company’s Portugese website reports that the same will happen to that nation’s seven outlets.

Now, rumours abound that GameStop will be ceasing operations in Europe entirely.

Gamespot UK’s commercial director announced that stores in the Republic of Ireland, at least, are safe for the foreseeable future.
