GAME claims to offer new releases for £5, doesn’t really

A new GAME offer claims that new releases are just £5, but closer inspection reveals a less impressive deal.

UK retailer GAME is currently offering new releases for a measly £5, according to a promotional campaign. But, as might be expected, the deal isn’t quite as good as it first seems.

What the company is actually offering is a trade-in guarantee, and only within two weeks of initial purchase. Customers may buy a new release for full-price, then trade it back in for store credit equating to the game’s value minus £5. This value must, of course, be spent in-store.

Furthermore, the offer is only applicable to a small selection of titles. Until February 29th, expect to be able to take advantage of the offer with Final Fantasy XIII-2, Soul Calibur V, The Darkness II, Tekken, and Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. A slightly larger selection of pre-owned games also come with the £5 store credit trade-in guarantee.

GAME marketing director Anne-Marie Mason described the offer, quite perplexingly, as ‘really unique’ in a press release issued this morning. “We encourage gamers to get in early to take advantage of this great offer today,” she added – although personally I’d suggest waiting until, y’know, the majority of the games on offer have actually been released.

  1. I used to work for GAME and can confirm that while they were once a pretty good game retailer, since they started selling shelf space to publishers their customer service has really gone down the tubes.
