Valve co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell has shared a few words of wisdom with potential games developers, suggesting they put players first.
Gabe Newell isn’t one to shy away from crowd-pleasing statements – only recently he spoke out against excessive DRM measures. Now, he’s handing out some advice for aspiring developers: the people that pay for your games come first.
“Do not focus on anyone but your customers. Your reputation will follow you forever so always be fair to your customers, and certainly one thing you need to always remember is that your customers are not going to be fooled”, Newell told Develop magazine. “Some people think they can get away with something and just hope people won’t see through the bullshit. The Internet is way smarter than any of us.”
While there’s a degree of easy-for-you-to-say-ism in Gabe’s words – Valve are lucky enough, unlike most studios, to not have to rely on the cash of publishers and shareholders – he has a point. In an industry where (for instance) suspected pirates are given not a slap on the wrist but sent huge fines, a little goodwill is likely to go a very long way.

Hey, that is a great thing to say! But you are right, unfortunately developers also must make their publisher and shareholders happy. Bummer.
