In a podcast interview with Nerdist, Gabe Newell confirmed that Valve was working on a TF2 short made with Source Filmmaker. “We’re working on a fifteen minute piece right now,” said Newell, who went on to explain that their team had originally planned a 90-minute version but discovered it was ‘way harder’ than they anticipated. “Now they’re like ‘okay, we’ll do something shorter.’”

Newell also touched upon the relationship between gamers and the worlds Valve has created. “You see us investing in all this cross-media stuff because it’s like, what is the opportunity, what is peoples relationship with the thing that they’re fans of,” said Newell, who used their various comics as an example. “If you look at the accumulated comics we’ve created, its a lot … thinking about how to integrate that so it makes a better overall experience for our fans is really exciting.”

So can we expect to see Half-Life go Hollywood anytime soon? Not according to Newell, who said they’ve been approached with offers before. “Part of the reason we started Source Filmmaker was that the ideas were so terrible. They didn’t understand why people were fans of the things that we had and so they weren’t capturing it. They were just picking some detail that sort of jumped out at them without ever actually being enthusiastic or passionate about it and then saying ‘well, we’ll do this,’” said Newell. “And there really were people who came to us with proposals of ‘Okay, imagine this. It’s Half-Life 1 and there are horses and it’s a cavalry charge and it’s like, high-tech carbon armor on the horses.’ And we’re like what the fuck are you talking about. Have you even played this?”
