‘Elder Scrolls Online looks identical to Skyrim’, says lead designer
Jamie Donnelly June 12, 2012 - 7:13 pmNews: Elder Scrolls Online lead gameplay designer Nick Konkle is very pleased with the environments in Zenimax’s upcoming MMORPG, saying people at the studio often point out how identical it looks to Skyrim.

Is the above image Skyrim or Elder Scrolls Online? You don’t know, do you? Well, according to Elder Scrolls Online’s lead gameplay designer Nick Konkle you don’t, as he reckons their MMO is looking identical to Skyrim, and will feel exactly like an Elder Scrolls game.
“The number of times that somebody at our studio will be like ‘hey, here’s this location in Skyrim, and here’s this location in our game’, and they’re identical, you can’t tell the difference,” said Konkle in a video interview with CVG. “It’s really nice, I think our environments are just mind-blowing.
“Our characters have a different feel to the Skyrim characters, largely due to the need to get so many on screen, and also because of being able to identify different races in a large scale battle, and so in that way we have a more stylised look. But I feel that the environment itself is so engaging, and so similar – it’s just really exciting to me. When I run around in our game, I feel like I’m in an Elder Scrolls game every time.”
Konkle certainly sounds genuine in his excitement, but you may remember Skyrim being a bit of a bug-filled, glitchy mess at times. That was in a singleplayer game, and with MMOs even more susceptible to bugs, Zenimax better hope they’re not putting an emphasis on visuals over performance, or it could all go horribly wrong.
