It’s no secret that the DQ series has used Nintendo’s massively popular Pokemon series as inspiration for many of its monster raising/battling spinoffs, such as Dragon Quest Monsters. But now, according to the latest Famitsu, Square Enix is now collaborating with Intelligent Systems to create a new spinoff that draws even further inspiration from the house that Pikachu built.

Called “Dragon Quest Wars”, this DSi downloadable game features a bevy of classic DQ monsters, which can be raised into battling other creatures in a four player online multiplayer showdown. Series mainstays such as Yuji Hori and Akira Toriyama are supervising the project, and further details mention that Wars is just the first in a proposed six game contract between Square Enix and Intelligent Systems. No word yet if the other five projects will be exclusive to the DSi as well.

The game is priced at 500 DSi points, but no release date has been given, nor has a confirmation for North American release (but it’s pretty much a given).
