Electronic Arts has today announced that a Dead Space 2 prequel game, entitled Dead Space Ignition, will be released this Autumn via Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network.

The game, written by comic writer Anthony Johnston and described as a “comic adventure”, tells the story of the events which take place in the hours directly leading up to the hotly anticipated survival horror sequel.

“Dead Space Ignition is the first of many exciting game extensions we have planned for the launch of Dead Space 2,” said Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer on the Dead Space franchise. “The interactive comic style game will give Dead Space fans a unique perspective on the events leading up to Dead Space 2, and will also introduce the storyline to a brand new audience of gamers.”

Ignition will also feature a number of unique hacking mini-games, as well as a branching storyline that allows players to survive the Necromorph outbreak in one of several ways. Each of the four endings will unlock additional features that can be used in Dead Space 2 itself – which set for release in January 2011.
