Double Take on Upcoming Neverwinter Title

There’s few names in games that will make me sweat, have spots of light appear in front of my eyes, and overall make me feel like I need to run and lay down at the same time. The name “Neverwinter” has a vast field of meaning for me, mostly associated with the sensations of pain and anguish. But it’s fine, I’ll calm down enough to tell you some news before I go and take some quiet time in a darkened room.
This week, Atari and Cryptic Studios have announced that a new Neverwinter game will be released on PC next year. It will be a new version of Neverwinter Nights, but just called Neverwinter. In Neverwinter, you choose to become one of five classic D&D classes and team up with friends or computer-controlled allies to form five-person co-op groups. Atari and Cryptic are also saying that you’ll be able to create your own storylines and quests via a content generation system, tentatively codenamed Forge.
There’s going to be trucks loads of stuff released alongside the game in the final quarter of next year. From a book trilogy, to a good ol’ tabletop roleplaying game. Yay…
And to explain to you why I treat the name Neverwinter with such trepidation: the one and only time I tried to install it, it destroyed my saved game files for every game, made it near impossible to re-install said games, I had on my PC in act of spontaneous sabotage that I doubt you’d be able to recreate. The only method left to me for setting my system to rights was using a boot disc…
