Diablo III’s runestones revealed

The folks at Blizzard have been doling out some info about Diablo III’s runestones, which adjust the effects and appearance of player skills.
Available in five colours, the runestones buff skills in certain ways. Adding a crimson runestone to a skill will increase its damage, for example, while an alabaster runestone adds a stun effect.
The other colours are indigo, obsidian and golden.
These runestones also come in different power ranks, and the higher the runestone’s power, the more pronounced its effect.
Customisation is key
According to Blizzard, “extensive character customization is one of the primary design goals for Diablo III.”
As well as runestones, “players will have many ways to customise and build each of the five character classes, including charms, traits, enhancements, gems, armor, weapons, dyes [and] skills.”
The fact that there are over 100 skills means a potential 500+ runestone combinations – and that’s without even factoring in the power ranks.
Consider those and we’re looking at possibly thousands of skill/runestone combos. Impressive stuff indeed!
Diablo III is vaguely slated for a PC release at the end of the year, although Blizzard have stated that they’ll happily take longer if needs be.
