Devil May Cry’s New Direction

Several days ago we mentioned that at this week’s Tokyo Game Show Capcom had announced that a fifth Devil May Cry game was in the works. As the collective wit of the internet has mulled over the new look for a character who is still dubbed “Dante”, so have I. If you’re wondering, still, just how different Dante could very well be then watch the TGS trailer below.

This appears to be a franchise reboot, leaving hardly any trace of Hideki Kamiya’s original part demon with a dangerous sibling and a love of pizza. Hideki has not responded well, according to Kotaku’s observations of his Twitter responses to questions from series fans. Of course, since Hideki left Capcom there was a limited chance that DMC was going to stay the way he had envisioned it.

Of the DMC games that have been released to date, only the original and the third have been my favourites. So perhaps fifth time’s the charm?

  1. This backlash is really pointless in my opinion. He may look different, but it’s a dam reboot, no one complained when the dude playing Kirk in the new star trek film looked nothing like Shatner.

Ninja Theory have made one of the most cinematic games I have ever played in Heavenly Sword, and if they keep the basic tenants of Dante’s character alive and well, well I am all the way in.

    • I’d actually like to see this new Dante evolve in ways that the previous character was unable to do, because his virtual ego was too big.
