Deus Ex: Human Revolution boss fights exist to make the story work – Eidos

Perhaps the only area coming in for heavy criticism in the superlative Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the boss fights, but Eidos has defended their inclusion as a “narrative decision”.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which sees release today in the UK, has been heaped with plaudits over the last week – not least by Kevin Pabst, who gave the game 9.1 in our Deus Ex: Human Revolution review – but if there’s been one consistent thread of criticism about the game, it’s that the boss fights – which essentially remove any of the game’s multiple approaches to a situation and force you into a straight-up combat scenario, proving particularly tough on those players who’ve favoured stealth in their augmentations – appear to have been dropped in from another game. However, Eidos Montreal’s Frank Lapikas defends their inclusion as a necessity to make the game’s plot work.

When asked about the boss fights, Lapikas said: “It’s a narrative decision, essentially.”

Further questioned on why they had gone for such a traditional confrontational approach in a game that is defined by giving players so may different tools for a situation, he explained to Edge: “The whole game is story-driven so if we gave all these opportunities to get through the bosses it created some headaches for us to get the narrative to work, so we had to make that decision.”

  1. The bosses are maddening at first, but as soon as you figure out what you’re supposed to do, you can take them out in the matter of seconds. Although it’s unlikely for most to beat them the first time, they weren’t that bad.

    • Thanks for that – I’m still only in the early stages of the game myself and must admit that the talk of the boss battles has got me slightly wary, especially as the game itself seems to so determined to push you down he stealth, non-confrontational route.

One piece of advice I’ve heard is to always keep 2 or 3 Praxis points unallocated when you get near to a Boss battle, so you can quickly boost up a relevant augmentation to help you out.
